Trekking Borneo from West to East

Experience the ultimate challenge! Crossing one of the most rugged islands on earth from East to West is one of the greatest adventure in Indonesia. Using roads, rivers and feet we traverse the jungle of Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). You must have a good level of fitness and adventurous spirit and a strong sense of determination, as conditions and accommodations are challenging.

This trip is different with other kinds of travel to Indonesia, and not so many Indonesia travel tour agent is able to arrange it. We will use busses, public house boat, chartered motorized canoes to access the jungle for a rugged days of trekking. We sleep in the simple houses of the villager with basic facilities and on the house boats. The trekking is tough and often wet, the only way to appreciate the primary jungle of Kalimantan and the most traditional Dayak Tribes settlements as well as the wildlife.

DAY 01: JAKARTA ARRIVAL
Upon arrival in Jakarta, we will transfer you to a hotel. Free programs.

Day 02 : JAKARTA – PONTIANAK
Arrival in Pontianak at Supadio airport, meet your guide and he will take you to the hotel. There are a lot of things to do while we are there. We can explore the riverbanks area of Pontianak by a boat. That way, we can observe the old and the new of Pontianak from a different perspective. This sightseeing trip will start at afternoon heading to sunset time from Serasan food-court, by Serasan river cruiser we’ll sailing headed to sunset time at down-river passing Kapuas Bridge, Beting Permai water village and Pontianak Sultanate Kadariyah Palace and its heritage mosque, Pontianak Harbor and equatorial monument. We will return back after 2 or 3 hours sailing and dinner in one time. (B)

Day 03 : PONTIANAK – PUTUSSIBAU
Departure by Indonesia Air Transport (IAT) at 09.00 and arrive at Putussibau 11.00. Stay at hotel in Putussibau. Free program. (B)

Day 04 : PUTUSSIBAU – NANGA BUNGAN
After breakfast at the hotel, we sail by longboat to Kapuas river headwaters. Onto the up streams as far as possible passing riverside views. Along this 4th day trip, tourist can see traditional longhouses belong to Taman Tribe, padi field and local fruits. In some places there’s piles of wood. You’ll see one or two lizard swimming. Bring your snack and drinks on the boat. Overnight at Nanga Bungan Village, a small remote village, either inside a tent or the local house. (B,L,D)

Day 05 : BUNGAN RIVER – TANJUNG LOKANG
In the morning, eat breakfast and onboard to a motorboat. The Bungan river water increasingly tight and fast, it is best to wear a life vest. Not much scenery could be seen. Rapids will excite, the river is fast flowing energetic, powerful stream. In the wet season, Bungan River can be passed for 2 to 3 hours, but in dry season, we must do water-trekking and pushing our long-boat together for 6 to 7 hours. We will have lunch-time in riverside. At afternoon, about 4pm, We’ll be reached Tanjung Lokang and overnight here, are to be prepared and overnight at the local house. (B,L,D)

Day 06 : TANJUNG LOKANG – KAHUNG CAVE (DIANG)
Morning preparation as usual, we will walk across to the green lawn “slash and burn long fellow dry” rice field and keep on walking to the forest. We’ll go trekking 6 hours, hike up the hill passing through jungle and small rivers. In the mid-day, we’ll reach Kahung Cave, a Punan’s old grave. There is many bones of Punan’s warrior stored in the Kahung Cave. We’ll have lunch at the Kahung Cave. After lunch break we continue trekking to the deep woods. Before dark we set the tent in the Bulit Riverside and have dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 07 : BULIT RIVER – BAROKAN RIVER
After breakfast, we’ll cross the river, trekking up and down in the jungle, passing small rivers, and cave. You may see exotic flora and fauna of Borneo. We have lunch on the spot, after rest keep on walking to the woods, see the beauty of nature and the habitats of its jungle. Before dark, set the tent by the Barokan riverside and have dinner. Day 08 : BAROKAN RIVER – LEA RIVER
Trekking here is never boring, there is always new development, estimating distance, views, location, progress the road that we’ll follow, the meals are to be prepared, the night life is up to us decide on. (B,L,D)

Day 09 : LEA RIVER – PIANG LO’ONG
This is the longest and the toughest trek. After breakfast, we cross the river, trekking the jungle up and down passing the cliff. After lunch we continue trekking to the deep woods. We start going to Mueller Range, and here is we’ll see a meeting point between Kapuas and Mahakam Rivers. The trek is challenging and daring, it will need more of adventure spirit and energy. Set a tent close to the river and eat dinner on the spot. (B, L, D)

Day 10 : PIANG LO’ONG – MULLER RANGE
The journey will continue through the tropical rain forest, and deep unto the river, we rest at lunch time. We’ll be surrounded by the beauty of the forest, and don’t be surprised you will see a few different animals passing by once in a while. This is a provincial border area between West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan. We’ll set up the camp at Ovan Tanah, which is means plate land in local. Meals are to be prepared. (B,L,D)

Day 11 : MULLER RANGE – MUARA CUTING
Morning preparation as usual, 7 hours walking today and the guide will introduce you to the skills of Dayak fishing and firebrand sodden wood. In your trip you will be accompany by porters from Dayak people. Meals are to be prepared and sleep in the tent. (B,L,D)

Day 12 : MUARA CUTING – SAI’TE or MAHAKAM RIVER
Early morning, go hunting for animals in the jungle with the help of local Dayak, then return for breakfast, and we’ll walk 5 hours to reach Sai’te. Overnight in the woods. (B,L,D)

Day 13 : SAI’TE or MAHAKAM RIVER – TIONG OHANG
Another 3 hours of walk to reach Mahakam river side, upon arrival the river side, pick up by the long boat, they take us to Tiong Ohang village. Spend the night at the local house. (B,L,D)

Day 14 : TIONG OHANG – LONG BANGUN
Breakfast at the traditional long house. We begin another sailing trips 8 to 10 hours by boat to Long Bangun. Spend the night at the local house. (B,L,D)

Day 15 : LONG BANGUN – SAIL ON THE HOUSE BOAT
After breakfast, leave the village of Long Bangun and onboard to a house boat, lunch and dinner will be provided on the boat. During the sailing trip, you can explore and learn the local way of living “river side civilization” very different from how we live. (B,L,D)

Day 16 : HOUSE BOAT – SAMARINDA
Arrive to the dock/harbor in the afternoon. Check-in to a hotel in Samarinda. The rest of the night is free time and dinner will be served on your personal account. (B,L)

DAY 17 : EXTRA DAY
This is an extra day or should I say it’s free day for you. The guide will be there to assist you, so if you want to go around town and see the mall or find out places to eat, you may well do so, it’s your free programs. (B)

DAY 18 : SAMARINDA – BALIKPAPAN
Breakfast from the hotel, and ready to leave Samarinda drive to Balikpapan by car passing by the forest of East Borneo, it takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to go to Sepinggan international airport to catch your flight to the next destination. (B)
